A First Time Mama’s Ultimate Baby Registry Checklist

Baby clothes, bouncers, and monitors, oh my! Creating a baby registry is a rite of passage for many expecting parents, but knowing where to start can be extremely daunting. If you have been putting yours off because of the overwhelm that accompanied the opinions and endless items, this baby registry checklist is for you! We’ll cover items you must have for baby and mama, items that we loved personally, extra items to consider, answers to the most common concerns and questions, and other tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way!

Baby Registry Must-Haves for Baby

Babies don’t come with an instruction manual, but a lot of the “must-have” items that appear on a baby registry list are actually just “nice to have”! This section will discuss items that a new baby will definitely need when they come home from the hospital

Baby Clothing

Pick a few outfits that are season appropriate taking your due date into consideration.  It’s helpful to have a few different sizes since babies range in size at the time of birth and grow quickly. Look for soft, breathable materials.  If you’re having a baby in the winter or a cold climate you will want to layer and have footed pj’s or socks that will stay on their feet.

Diapers and Wipes

You need a ton of diapers (like a lot), so register for multiple sizes! Diapers aren’t the most fun gift to receive, but I promise you’ll remember who gave you that jumbo box of diapers when you run out in the MOTN.  We also absolutely love Hello Bello – premium product without the premium price tag! It is a subscription-based diaper service and it’s delivered directly to your doorstep. Use code thematrescence for 15% off your first order.  No more late night target runs! Going green? Cloth diapers are a great choice too.

Feeding Supplies

Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, you will need bottles, nipples, and a good breast pump if you plan to breastfeed.  Check with your insurance provider to see what pumps are covered under your plan.

Car Seat

When selecting a car seat for your baby registry, safety should be your top priority. Look for seats that meet the latest safety standards. Ease of installation is crucial, so consider models that have straightforward setup instructions and are compatible with your vehicle. It’s also important to choose a seat that suits your baby’s age and weight, ensuring a snug fit and optimal safety. Features like adjustable harnesses and removable covers add convenience, making life a little easier for new parents. Also take your lifetsyle into consideration.  I know the Doona is a popular option among parents right now, however, this would not have made sense for my city lifestyle that was filled with stairs and lack of riding in a car.  A lightweight option that could easily click in and out of my stroller frame was more compatible at that time.

These basics will keep your baby comfortable and well-cared for in the early days. Aside from these, a safe place to sleep and mama’s warm body to snuggle are all they need.

Everything You Need for Mama

You’re just as important as your baby! Read that again, YOU are just as important as your baby. They are counting you to be your best. As a first-time mom, you don’t know what you don’t know. Here are a list of items we think are essential to make it easy to care for yourself while you’re caring for an infant.

Comfortable Nursing Bras and Pads

Add these items to your registry to make sure you are well supported as you navigate the changes happening to your breasts. Milk typically comes in a few days after delivery and the fluctuation in the size of your breasts for the first few weeks as your body regulates milk production or the weaning process is highly variable. Make sure you stick nursing pads inside to make sure you’re not constantly leaking down your shirt.

Postpartum Care Kit

Think pads, pain relief spray, and comfortable underwear. We have a list of the best postpartum essentials and everything you need to take care of mama if you want to stock up!

Sleep Support

Unfortunately we can’t add sleep directly to your registry but we do have a few items that will ensure you get the restful z’s you deserve!  Hatch Restore bedtime assistant has ambient light settings that are so helpful for middle of the night feeds and diaper changes as well as the ability to play white noise or peaceful soundscapes to help you drift back to sleep!  Our guide, How to Get Sleep With A Newborn, is full of sleep hygiene tips, how to create a sleep plan with your partner, a tracker and journal, and access to our bedtime meditations for mama!

Hydration & Snacks

It’s easy with a new baby at home to forget to fuel yourself! Blood sugar stability and hydration are key components to healthy healing and sufficient milk supply.  Check out our amazon storefront for a list of our favorite snacks and hydration support!

Baby Gear We Love But Maybe Not Essential

Like we said, there are “must-have” and there are “nice to have”. Here is a list of nice-to-have items to consider based on your needs.

  • Baby Breeza or a Bottle Warmer – Convenient for warming up milk or formula to the perfect temperature, especially during nighttime feedings or outings.
  • Diaper Pail – helps contain odors and keeps your nursery smelling fresh between trash runs.
  • Baby Swing
  • Baby Carrier or Sling
  • Stroller

These gear choices can significantly enhance your day-to-day life.

All the Extras

Sometimes, it’s the little extras that make all the difference:

  • Toys and Books – Stimulate your baby’s development with age-appropriate toys and books.
  • Humidifier – Helps maintain optimal humidity levels, which can ease breathing, prevent dry skin, and reduce the likelihood of colds and congestion.  Look for a cool mist option – once baby can crawl we don’t want them getting burned by getting close to the machine or by pulling the cord off the table.
  • High Chair – Makes meal times easier and more organized once your baby starts eating solids.
  • Baby Monitor – Ask yourself if this is necessary and improving your life or causing more anxiety.  We lived in a tiny apartment with my first baby, I could definitely hear his cries and a monitor wasn’t necessary.
  • Baby Bathtub – Sink baths work well, lay a towel down in your big tub with a very minimal amount of water, and in the early days you can really hold them with one hand while you wipe them down!
  • Hooded Baby Bath Towels – yes, they are adorable, but a regular towel works just fine!
  • Baby Sleep Support – books, online courses, or working with a certified sleep specialist can bring you peace of mind and some much needed rest.

These extras might not be necessary, but they certainly improve the overall experience.

Additional Things to Consider Before Creating Your Baby Registry

It’s normal to have questions. Here, we address some of the most common concerns:

  • What if I forget something important? – Don’t worry; you can always add items later.
  • How do I handle hand-me-downs? – Accept them gratefully; they can save you money and are often well-loved.  If you really don’t want to use them start a donation box!
  • What about returns and exchanges? – Most stores have a good return policy, but check before you finalize your registry.
  • Is it rude to register for an expensive item? – Not at all!  Providing options as affordable as pacifiers to larger items like your stroller or furniture allow family and friends to find something in their budget.  Many people like to go in on group gifts!  Lastly, most registries offer a ‘close-out’ discount so even if no one plans to purchase your $800 stroller you can use the coupon yourself!

When to Make A Baby Registry

Timing can be everything. It’s best to start early but not so early that you miss out on new products or deals or over add items:

  • Second Trimester – A perfect time to start. Give yourself plenty of time to research and decide what you need.
  • Baby Shower – Make sure to finalize your registry a few weeks before your shower to give guests plenty of time.
  • Updates – Keep updating your registry as you learn more about what you’ll need.  Avoid the temptation to clear your registry when you’re in the throes of nesting.

Starting early gives you ample time to think things through and make the best choices.

Managing Your Online Baby Registry

A registry isn’t a one-and-done task; it needs to be managed:

  • Regular Updates – Keep removing and adding them to your list as you get closer to your due date.
  • Feedback from other Moms – Listen to experienced moms and update your list based on their advice.
  • Seasonal Adjustments – Consider the season your baby will be born in and adjust accordingly.

Staying on top of your registry ensures you don’t miss out on any necessities.

What to Avoid Adding To Your Baby Registry

Not everything on the market is necessary or even safe:

  • Drop-side Cribs – These have been banned due to safety concerns.
  • Too Many Newborn Clothes – Babies grow fast, and you don’t want to end up with too many baby clothes they never even wear.
  • Bulky Gear – Items like large strollers may be impractical for your lifestyle.

Avoiding these items will save you space, money, and hassle.

Where to Register For Baby

Choosing the right store is crucial:

  • Big Retailers – Stores like Target and Walmart offer a wide range of products and good return policies.
  • Online Options – Websites like Amazon or BabyList provide a large selection, easy registry management, and the option to add items from other retailers.
  • Specialty Stores – Consider stores specializing in baby products for unique items and expert advice.

The right store will make your registry experience seamless and enjoyable.

How Much is Too Much of Each Item?

It’s easy to overdo it, but moderation is key:

  • Diapers – Stock up, but don’t go overboard on newborn sizes. They outgrow them quickly. Good news, you can return unopened boxes of diapers.  If you have opened boxes consider donating to your local diaper bank or posting on a free facebook group in your area.
  • Clothing – Have enough to last between laundry days, but remember, babies grow fast.
  • Bottles and Pacifiers – A few different types to see what your baby prefers, but don’t buy too many initially.  Once baby arrives you’ll find out what type of bottle or pacifier they prefer and then you can stock up.  If you’re returning to work after maternity leave you’ll likely need six or more bottles to get you through the day.

Moderation will ensure you have what you need without unnecessary clutter.

Don't Stress Over the Best Baby Registry

Creating a baby registry is an exciting step in preparing for your little one. By following this comprehensive checklist, you can ensure you have all the essentials, plus a few extras, to make your life easier. Remember, it’s not just about having the right items but also about feeling prepared and confident as you welcome your baby into the world.  Don’t stress mama, with the ability to online shop and have most items delivered over night you’ll be just fine with the bare essentials.
